(Exodus 20:3, Galatians 3:26-28, Matthew 4:1-11, Matthew 6:25-34)
Open up the doors, come gather ‘round people It’s time to give back what He deserves Hey Hey Hey! This is a call to worship, and everyone is welcome here Hey Hey Hey! We are all invited, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from Well there’s a battle in this world, and it’s raging for our worship And He’s the Only One that’s worth the fight Jesus said to seek Him first, and everything would work out And we can leave our worries behind So let’s leave here worshipping the Lord God Almighty Since what we worship we become more like 'Cause God is good, God is grand, God is wonderful! Hey Hey Hey! Let’s sing His praise Hallelujah, Hallelujah! Hey Hey Hey! He is Lord! © 2004 Steve Kropp Music |

I wrote this song back in 2004 for a youth worship service. There were kids coming to youth group wearing mohawks or goth clothes, and I wanted them to know that church was a place where they belonged. Kids seem to like songs that are participatory, so I threw in the “HEY!” so that they could get into the song even if it was their first time hearing it. Also, it serves as a wake up call considering it sometimes takes us too much time to get into worship. This is a way for me to say to everyone (including myself) “hey, it’s time to worship the Lord now”, which is not something we should take lightly!
I originally just wanted to keep this as a live song, but it’s popularity kept growing & growing among the youth groups we play for. The clincher was when Chris Davis (who produced my debut album, Magnify) got on board to produce a bunch of tracks. He really worked his magic with Weezer-like guitar bends, record scratches, loops, synthesizers, and so on. After I heard it, it was a no-brainer that I had to make it the opening song! |

Where are You, God? What do I need You to be? All of these questions unanswered… Maybe I just haven’t been listening? When praising is the last thing that I want to do You reassure me that it’s true, that it’s true You are the Light at my tunnel’s end You are the epitome of friend And You are, You’ve always been, You’ll always be right here I’ve come up short, but there in the pit Love lifted me I looked to the hills for help, and my Hope was all I could see Emotions are fickle, and circumstances are fleeting So, I’ll cling to Your promises, I will declare © 2007 Steve Kropp Music |

As I write this, our son Tobin is a few weeks away from turning one. He’s currently going through a phase where he’s very attached to Mommy & Daddy. He’s always making sure we’re in his site, and he often just craves a hug or smile. Once he hears our reassuring words, he’s back to tormenting our pets or spreading his toys throughout the house. Similarly, I find myself often seeking reassurance from my Heavenly Father.
I don’t need to look any further than scripture (see Psalm 42:5 & Psalm 121:1-2) to know that He’s right here. I was listening to the David Crowder*Band and came up with this catchy, energetic chorus. It’s always nice to get another set of ears involved in the creative process, so I invited a worship leader friend of mine (Spike Burton) to play some bass & guitar on the demo. He came up with some great parts that really gave the song its direction. Chris heard the demo and couldn’t wait to record it! This song was particularly fun for me because it was the first studio song that I played electric guitar on. I tracked the siren part with an ebow, and the random noises at the very end of the song by twisting knobs on my delay pedal. |

Ahhh, the Great Commission (Matthew 28:20)…I grew up in the church, so I probably read it or heard it a thousand times. However, God can reveal something new & powerful in an old familiar verse. This happened to me when the word “always” jumped off the page one day. That word might be the most important word in the Great Commission. I mean imagine this…what if Jesus said, “go to all the world & make disciples, and by the way you’re on your own”. We certainly would fail. But fortunately He said, “I’m with you always”…in other words, “I’ll help you”, “I’ll give you the words to speak & the songs to sing”, and “I’ll point you in the direction where you can be successful & cultivate your gifts”. I don’t know about you, but I need Jesus…things just get ugly when I’m on my own. This song focuses on God always being God. That’s a pretty simple yet profound truth. He is God during the spring as well as the winter, during our peaks as well as our valleys, etc.
I went through a phase in the spring of 2007 where I listened to the British piano rock band Keane a lot. Naturally, I found inspiration in their “foreign” rhythms and chord progressions. That summer my band got together to record some demos in a local studio (Linear Sound in Fredericksburg). My high hopes for this song went even higher when Thomas Johnson (my keys player at the time) came up with a great synthesizer hook for the chorus. Chris eventually recreated a studio version of our demo and helped tweak the chorus melody so it fit nicely in a 3-part harmony. In my opinion, this is one of the standouts on the album. It’s used quite a bit at my home church and we seem to “always” include it in our sets on the road! |

I was playing this verse guitar part for months, but was having trouble writing lyrics to go with it. Naturally, I found some inspiration after my wife (Tracy) told me she was pregnant in December of 2006. I started studying fetal growth on the Internet to see what I had gotten myself into?!? The intricacy of the human body is just so amazing! I then did some research on a guy called Snowflake Bentley who figured out how to take pictures of snowflakes through his microscope. This is where your science teacher got the fact that no two snowflakes have the same design. My research soon shifted to the vast aspects of creation (i.e., the Grand Canyon and pictures from the Hubble Telescope). Simply put: God as Creator is very impressive! These lyrics eventually wrote themselves…however, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Tracy came up with the "Matchless Flame" play on words in verse 2.
I felt we needed to go a little more upbeat on this studio version than we did for the Live album. Chris did a great job of running it through his pop/rock filter. He also extended the tag & arranged the background vocals for a big ending. This was a landmark song for me because it’s one of the first that I arranged for another instrument (Sue Cosgrove’s flute). I brought in a local ringer (Ed Dickerson on fiddle) to add some harmonies, fills, & riffs. |

We got a lot of snow here in Virginia in December 2005. This was around the same time that I was reading The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe, so I was daydreaming about when the beautiful colors of spring would bloom out of this dead, boring white. Being stuck in the house lead to some research on the topic of redemption in the Bible. Specifically, I was attracted to the numerous times I found the phrase "all things new". So, I stayed in bed one morning and wrote this funky song. It’s Tracy’s favorite!
Since the day I wrote it, this song has been screaming for a horn section and a Gospel choir. Fortunately, my intern (JD Jump, what a cool name!) at the time did quite a bit of choir singing at Randolph-Macon College. He arranged for a bunch of his friends to come up to the studio to sing the echoes and beef up the choruses. Lastly, I brought in “Kid Wonder” (John Holden, who was only 17 at the time) to rip the guitar solo during the outro of the song. |

I can’t remember where I heard it, but someone was describing our separation from God and how Jesus bridged that gap through the cross & resurrection. I’m a visual person, so that imagery resonated with me and I responded by writing this little poem. I played it for my wife, and she loved the lyrics (she actually didn’t believe that I wrote them!) but thought the music needed revising. So I gave it another shot on piano and decided to keep it that way for the recording.
I usually put quite a bit of thought into CD titles. I was kicking around a few ideas for this record and sent them to my brother for advice. He told me that he liked “The Bridge” the most because “it just sounded like an album title”. The more I thought about it, the more I liked it. Music seems to be a universal language that bridges gaps between people (race, gender, socioeconomic background, etc.), and it has allowed me to witness to and share my faith in a way that I don’t think I would have the courage to otherwise. |

Why is it that the church has so many songs about the cross, but it has few songs about Christ rising from the grave? Michelangelo challenged the artists of his day to stop depicting Jesus during His crucifixion, but to focus on portraying Him risen & victorious! I took this a step further and tried to touch on the whole package...specifically, the Mystery of Faith: "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!". Supposedly Chris Tomlin released a b-side called "The Lion became the Lamb"...which I've never heard, but loved the title so I used it in the first line of the chorus.
I knew early on that I wanted this studio album to be diverse. I wanted the foundation to be the pop/rock worship songs produced by Chris, but I also wanted to fill out the tracklist with some “other” stuff (i.e., bluegrass, folk, classical) that I’d take more of the producer’s role for. I love the soundtrack for the indie film Once (about an Irish busker or street musician), and imitated that stripped down acoustic style for “That Was When”. Sue played the flute arrangement similar to the Live album version, and Ed’s fiddle complimented her parts beautifully. Then I added a subtle piano, and had a family friend (Elisabet Goodwyn) sing the fitting background vocals. |

My sister-in-law (Jackie) gave me an interesting book as a Christmas gift in 2007. It's called Man in White, and is Johnny Cash's historical novel based on the Apostle Paul's conversion. The chorus & title of this song came from a reoccurring phrase in the first half of the book. After reading the story & matching it up with scripture (Acts), I was really inspired by how passionate Paul was in spreading the Gospel. I ended up writing this song from Paul's perspective. What would this world look like if all Christians abandoned self for their call in ministry? Maybe our actions will follow if we start by singing our intentions?
This was the last song written for this album (early 2008), and one of a few songs that we didn't try out as a band before attempting a studio recording. People seemed to like the acoustic rock sound of "I Believe" (from Magnify), so Chris went the Counting Crows/Tom Petty route with production. I came up with the guitar intro idea that we actually ended up keeping. It'll be fun to head out on the road with something brand new & fresh! |

Psalm 119:105 is a well known verse: “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.” But, for some reason, songs based on that phrase are few & far between…this being my attempt. I don’t know about you, but I feel that being a Christian is hard work. Worldly things constantly distract me, so I often need to be redirected or reminded to keep my eyes fixed on how Christ would have me live.
We tried this one out a few times during the summer of 2007, but then I temporarily shelved it. I put off recording it until last, just in case I ended up writing something “better”. However, it just had a way of sticking around…probably because it doesn’t sound like any of my other songs (i.e., the lyrical content, the riff & hits, etc). Mike (my drummer) encouraged me to go ahead with it since “it has a nice rawk chorus”. I’m so glad I did, and Chris made some tweaks that allow it to be a little more congregational. |

Contagious yawns, I feel a world apart. Or why does it seem like girls don’t… Father, are we there yet? Tell me how long it’ll be till I can stop singin’ this song? I can’t wait ‘till the beans are spilled, secrets are shared, and puzzles are filled! While we’re on the subject I started with twelve, found the key and then five got shelved. Sometimes I wonder if there’ll be more when I get to Heaven and He opens the door. But until then, I’ll keep pluggin’ away, use what I got make the most of today. I’ve been playing Chris Rice’s “Cartoons” to smiles and chuckles for years now. I thought about updating that song with today’s boob tube characters, but decided it might make more sense for me to come up with my own song on a lighthearted subject. I wrote this after seeing the DaVinci Code movie. In this life, I think we are often torn between truth and lies. Our faith and trust in God is the only thing that can help us discern these lies and shine light on the truth. I think we really need to unload our questions on God. We might not get all the answers now, but there will come a day when everything makes sense (1 Corinthians 13:12).
I thought about recording a studio version of this song, but I really loved this live version…especially Thomas Johnson’s keyboard solo! I ended up deciding to use it for this album because it was first of all different enough than the version on Live, and I felt it really captured the band’s personality. It was recorded at a summer 2007 concert by John Rensink (http://www.superbavsystems.com), who used to run sound for us on the road before he moved back to Minnesota. After listening to it over and over for a year, I gave John a call to discuss remixing it. We then fixed a vocal flub, added a saxophone, and threw in a canned applause at the end. |

"When the Saints"- traditional (Public Domain) Notes
There are quite a few spirituals & bluegrass Gospel songs that deal with dying &/or Heaven. One family favorite called “Do Lord” has the verse “I got a home in Gloryland that outshines the sun”. I love the idea of referring to Heaven as Gloryland. Scripture tells us that He’s coming riding on clouds (Mark 13:26) and like a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2). I wrote the chorus about how we’ll want to be ready, and the verse content on what Revelations tells us we’ll experience in Heaven.
Mike & I originally recorded this song as a demo. It was drums, vocals & guitar and I overdubbed bass, mandolin, & banjo. We listened to it a bunch and really liked the raw feel and decided that we probably couldn’t do better if we tried it again for the album version. So I redid some of my parts and had Ed come in to play fiddle and sing harmony. The song was so short that we ended up adding a bit of “When the Saints” as a tag since it fit thematically. |

I often find inspiration for song ideas when I’m reading scripture or Christian literature. This song was a response to a chapter in David Nasser’s book Glory Revealed: How the Invisible God makes Himself Known. In Chapter 10, Nasser talks about how God’s glory can be revealed through our experiences. The line, “He uses our scars as beauty marks” sparked this first verse. I wrote the second around an acceptance theme, and the third about how we’ve failed God yet how redemption/love will win in the end. Like “Gloryland”, this was a demo that we turned into the album version by re-tracking some of my parts. |

*First Place in VAUMC's 2009 Peace with Justice songwriting contest Notes
In July 2007, we were the house band for a missions-based camp called impact Richmond. This was a very powerful week for everyone involved! It was just awesome to see how these youth were transformed by acts of service in their community. One night at the end of the week we held a worship service for the homeowners where they took the opportunity to thank the youth for being Christ’s hand & feet. We ended this emotional service with singing “How Great is our God”. Halfway through the song, tears were streaming down my face as I realized what bringing His Kingdom to Earth could be!
One video we watched during the week featured snippets of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech. I loved how he quoted scripture, particularly Amos 5:24: “No, we are not satisfied and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters, & righteousness like a mighty stream”. I was staying at Jackie’s place during the camp, and had some down time during the days to reflect. I came up with this guitar lick fairly quickly, but took most of the 2 weeks of camp to write the lyrics around the missions theme. Our band demo of this song was kind of punk, but I suggested to Chris that we record the studio version a little more Motown style after seeing a James Brown performance in the movie “Talk to Me”. Chris loved the idea & we put the icing on the cake by getting Anthony Campbell to add some soul with background vocals. |

I’m often sidetracked by some of the news features that pop up while I’m logging in to my e-mail. Have you ever noticed that most news is bad news? In 1967 the Beatles sang “All You Need is Love”. We all heard that song, but did we listen? I felt like I had to reprise that truth 40 years later. One morning I just got fed up and scribbled down the first verse to this song: “Well, I have this dream, that one day the headlines will read: Killed with Kindness, Divorced from Sin, Attacked by Prayer, This Just In!” In Mark 12:30-31, Jesus told us that the greatest commandment is to love God & your neighbor as yourself. My optimistic side tells me that changing the headlines is just four letters away.
I wrote this song when we were putting the finishing touches on Peaks & Valleys (my acoustic project). With a whole new album of songs, “Just Need Love” was temporarily forgotten. Every once in a while I dust off the shelf and try out my backlog of songs on my wife or band. I played this one for Tracy, and she encouraged me to start using it. I listened, and eventually decided it’d make a great closer. I really like how it has a dreamy vibe (particularly the glockenspiel) & turns into a big sing along at the end. |

This hidden track is a song called “Little Baby Boy” that I wrote when Tracy was pregnant with Tobin. She read somewhere (probably in What to Expect When You’re Expecting), how babies start to hear outside noises from inside of the womb. The book suggested that we talk to & sing to him so he gets used to our voices. I always liked the bit in Zephaniah 3:17 about God singing over us…so I wrote this lullaby that we’ve been singing to him ever since! This recording is just a simple demo that we recorded to accompany a newborn picture on the splashpage of my website. I added it as a hidden track to dedicate the record to him! |
